2024 Preakness Stakes Analysis: Seize the Grey’s Dominance | Point Spreads
Seize the Grey was too good for Mystik Dan in the Preakness Stakes, ending a potential Triple Crown bid.
Our 2024 Preakness Stakes analysis looks at what happened during the race and where the runners go now.
The Belmont Stakes is next of the Triple Crown races, and it usually attracts a top field.
Age No Barrier for Lukas
Seize the Grey’s trainer, D Wayne Lukas, is 88 years old, making him the oldest Preakness Stakes winner in history.
It was his seventh Preakness Stakes winner but the first for the ownership group, which consisted of over 300 small-percentage owners, according to horse racing news.
“Isn’t that something to make that many people happy?” Lukas said. “It’s a helluva concept, it really is. To see that many people happy in racing is really special. I’m happy, but I love that I could make them happy.”
Seize the Day wasn’t one of the fancied runners in the field, but he had solid form entering the second leg of the Triple Crown.
He now eyes the Belmont Stakes in the search for more riches, and Lukas believes he’ll have no problem getting the distance.
“If they are going to beat him, they may want to extend it back to a mile and a half,” Lukas said. “If we go (to the Belmont), he’ll be tough. He can get a mile and a quarter. He would have gotten a mile and a quarter today.”
He’s confident of a big run, and of all the Preakness Stakes winners in recent history, Seize the Day has enough ability to match them.
We expect him to be one of the better backed runners for the Belmont Stakes, and our 2024 Preakness Stakes analysis has him finishing in the top three.
Mystik Dan Goes Down Fighting
It wasn’t to be for Mystik Dan, who finished just over two lengths behind Seize the Grey.
He came off a terrific upset win in the Kentucky Derby when beating the favorites in the stretch, but he received all favors in the run.
It didn’t completely pan out the way he expected on Saturday at Pimlico, but he lost no admirers with the run.
We’re not sure if he’s going to the Belmont Stakes, but the original plan was to race him in the third leg of the Triple Crown.
Given the way he hit the line over the shorter distance, we expect his connections to be confident of bouncing back and taking two legs.
Mystik Dan was backed into favoritism after early favorite Muth was scratched for Bob Baffert. It was the even-money favorite before being removed from betting markets in the days leading up to the Preakness Stakes.
Regardless of where Mystik Dan races next, he looks primed for a successful career.
Catching Freedom Getting Close
Our 2024 Preakness Stakes analysis looks at Catching Freedom, who is getting better with every run.
He hit the line hard in the Kentucky Derby before battling gamely for third in the Preakness Stakes, so he’s not far off winning a feature race.
The Brad Cox-trained colt took out the Grade II Louisiana Derby before the Kentucky Derby, so the class is there, and Cox is a champion trainer.
It’s hard to line up how good this year’s 3-year-old crop is, but a few runners could have solid careers. Catching Freedom is one of those runners, so if he lines up in the Belmont Stakes, he should be given a chance.
Bettors should expect something around +450 in the Belmont if he takes part.
