2024 NFL Draft: Tyler Nubin goes No. 47 overall to the New York Giants

Former Minnesota star Tyler Nubin is joining the New York Giants as a second-round 2024 NFL Draft selection, at Pick 47 . He is the first Gopher safety to go that high since Antoine Winfield Jr. went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. 

Minnesota brought in Nubin as a four-star prospect back in the 2019 recruiting class, as he was a consensus top-10 prospect within the state of Illinois.  Nubin played in 55 career games for the Gophers and set a program record with 13 interceptions. He made 207 tackles (143 solo), had 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, broke up 24 passes (ranks tied for eighth in school history) and was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. 

Nubin has been looking forward to this day for some time. 

“Draft night is going to be emotional, for sure,” Nubin said. “It’ll be exciting to be around my family during that. I was invited to head to Detroit for the draft, but I’ll be home in Illinois for that. I just want to be around my family and I feel like I got too many family members that wanted to be invited to the green room, and they would have been mad at me if I had to pick and choose. So I didn’t want to go through that.”

Even for someone as accomplished as Nubin has been at the Big Ten level, it’s been an interesting experience to hear the good and the bad from NFL teams during this pre-draft process.

“From talking with NFL teams, they just love the type of player I am. They love how tough I am,” Nubin explained. “They love how much I love the game, and you can’t really hide that. My work on the whiteboard and the film room, I feel like is second to none. I feel like I’m the best in this draft when it comes to doing stuff on the board and bringing it to the field. I feel like that’s what I do best.”

“Talented safety prospect with the size, length and instincts that teams are looking for to shore up the back end. Nubin has the ability to play as an interchangeable safety but will make his money as a ball thief. He’s rangy over the top in two-high safety looks and plays chess in the middle of the field, using instincts to think along with the quarterback and pounce on throws from an angle. He’s average in man coverage and might lack ideal top-end speed, but his anticipation and discipline help make up for that. He’s capable in run support, but his pursuit angles get him beat outside. Nubin’s traits, instincts and ball skills give him an opportunity to become a successful long-term starter.”
