NITTEC ready for influx eclipse travel in Western New York

We are now less than one week away from witnessing a total solar eclipse in Western New York. 

Hundreds of thousands of people are set to travel to our region to take in this spectacle in the sky.

The Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition, otherwise known as NITTEC, are keeping a close eye on the roads. There are already warning messages out on area highway signs.

Officials have been telling local residents for weeks now to stay home and watch the eclipse. You will avoid these obvious traffic delays.

But if you do head out on April 8, keep an eye on those highway signs for important messages before and after totality.

“We’re going to be communicating via those signs and changing those messages as conditions change. Influx in traffic is expected to come Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday leading up to the eclipse, but after, its everyone trying to leave at the same time,” Athena Hutchins, NITTEC executive director, said. “A lot of the messaging has been stay where you are, enjoy the activities, leave late so you are um kinda avoiding some of that traffic.”

Motorists are also encouraged to check out NITTEC’s website and mobile app to check out traffic cameras and to read up on other traffic conditions.
