The New York Giants are still waiting on tight end Darren Waller
to make his decision regarding a potential retirement, but one NFL analyst believes he’s a cut candidate anyway.
Waller has spent the majority of the offseason away from the team as he contemplates his decision. It’s been going on for a few months now, which is why the idea of outright releasing the tight end is a consideration.
In listing the best player who could be cut from every team, Waller was the obvious choice from Bleacher Report.
Darren Waller has been transparent about considering retirement this offseason, so it’s no coincidence the Giants drafted Theo Johnson in the fourth round. New York presumably will keep Waller if he decides to play, but the team would save $6.7 million if he’s released.
The Giants traded for Waller during the 2023 offseason hoping he would be a factor in the passing game. However, he had little impact dealing with injuries while the Giants offense flopped in a major way.
Though the Giants have a contingency plan
after drafting Theo Johnson in the fourth round, Waller’s indecisiveness continues to hover over the Giants’ preparation for a potential bounce-back season.
It doesn’t seem likely that the Giants will cut Waller if he decides to stay, but a decision likely needs to be made soon from the veteran tight end.
