After producing what could prove to be the worst offensive outputs of the entire WNBA season, the Phoenix Mercury must quickly rebound for another tough test as they visit the New York Liberty tonight (7:00 pm ET, CBS Sports Network).

Last night, the Mercury (3-3) shot 23.8% from the field in a 70-47 loss to the Connecticut Sun. They made only 15 of 63 shots from the field, including just 1 of 27 from three. Entering the game, they were first in the WNBA in made threes per game and second in perimeter percentage.

Having to turn around and play another championship contender on the road the next night is certainly not ideal, but it also means that there isn’t a lot of time to stew over a putrid performance. Will that result in a strong response? Or is another hammering on the horizon?

Are the Mercury coming down to earth after a positive start to the season?

After allowing 107 points in Saturday’s loss to the Dallas Wings, Phoenix’s struggles against the Sun were on the offensive end.

Kahleah Copper (32 points, 11 of 22 FG, 4 of 7 3PT, 6 of 7 FT) and Diana Taurasi (28 points, 10 of 20 FG, 6 of 13 3PT, 2 of 2 FT) combined for 60 points against Dallas, but against the Sun, they combined for 13 points, 4 of 25 from the field, and 0 of 12 from three.

A repeat of that is unlikely, but can the Mercury put in a competitive performance at Barclays Center?

They may be catching the Liberty at the right time. It’s too early to be concerned about New York, but after losing at home to the Chicago Sky last Thursday, they laid a big egg on Saturday in an 84-67 loss to the Minnesota Lynx.

With both teams looking to bounce back from poor performances on the offensive end, I’m going to take the optimistic view and go for the over.

But will the Mercury cover the spread? I typically lean to the underdog covering with spreads of this size, and I won’t deviate from that here, even with the Liberty at home and the Mercury on a back-to-back.
