New York Giants OTAs: Biggest standouts from second week | Sporting News

The New York Giants got through the second week of organized team activities (OTA) and have one more week before mandatory minicamp arrives.

Though there was still no Darren Waller, whose release now can save the Giants $11.6 million, we did see the return of wide receiver Darius Slayton from his contract dispute.

The Giants have one more week of voluntary OTAs before the three-day mandatory minicamp arrives June 11. The media will be present at one more OTA practice next week and at all three minicamp sessions before the offseason concludes.

With the second week of OTAs now concluded, here’s a look at the biggest standouts for the Giants:

New York Giants standouts from second week of OTAs

WR Darius Slayton

Making his return after getting some incentives added to his contract, Slayton picked up right where he left off as the team’s leading receiving from the 2023 season. According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Slayton caught a crossing route from Daniel Jones in 7-on-7 drills and had two catches from Drew Lock as well.

WR Wan’Dale Robinson

Another wideout looking to continue his development as a reliable option, Robinson was active all day during the media’s viewing of Thursday’s practice. Duggan reported that Robinson lined up both in the backfield and out wide and that he had “five catches from Lock and two catches from Jones.”

CB Darnay Holmes

While much of the focus in the cornerback room has been on Deonte Banks and Cor’Dale Flott, who is currently leading the cornerback competition, Holmes is trying to make his mark. He may have had the play of the day, blowing up a check-down to running back Eric Gray in the flat. Holmes was able to strip the ball from the second-year running back and pick it up for a recovered fumble.

CB Andru Phillips

The rookie cornerback is beginning to make an impression during OTAs. Though he has positional flexibility, the Giants have been eyeing him as the nickel, and he’s been working with the second-team defense. That hasn’t stopped him from making plays, though. According to Jon Schmeelk of the team’s website, Phillips “got his hands on a couple of passes” against Slayton and Isaiah Hodgins.

TE Theo Johnson

With Darren Waller away from the team indefinitely and some other tight ends dealing with injuries, the opportunities have been there for the rookie. Johnson was pretty active as a receiver during team drills catching passes from Jones in 7-on-7 work and a pair of passes from Lock during no-huddle and red-zone drills.
