Tucupita Marcano lost every single Pirates bet that got him banned from MLB for life
The bets that got Tucupita Marcano banned from MLB for life Tuesday weren’t even close to being worth it.
The Padres infielder, who was banned for betting on Pirates games while he was assigned to their major league club last year, did not win any of the 25 bets he placed on Pittsburgh and barely won any of his 231 MLB-related bets, according to the league.
“Consistent with Marcano’s overall baseball betting activity, almost all of Marcano’s Pirates bets were on which Club (the Pirates or their opponent) would win the game or whether there would be more or less than a certain number of runs scored in the game,” MLB said in a release. “Ultimately, Marcano lost all of his parlays involving the Pirates and only won 4.3% of all of his MLB-related bets overall.”
Marcano, 24, was found to have placed 387 baseball bets, some of which were international games, from Oct. 16, 2022 through Oct. 23, 2022 and July 12, 2023 through Nov. 1, 2023 through a legal sportsbook.
The Venezuela native, who was named after his hometown, bet more than $150,000 on baseball, which included $87,319 on MLB-related bets.
Marcano didn’t appear in any of the Pirates games he bet on, as all of those bets came after his season-ending ACL injury suffered on July 24, 2023, but he was a part of the major league club and received treatment at the team’s ballpark.
He originally signed with the Padres as an international free agent in 2016 at the age of 16.
The Padres dealt Marcano to the Pirates before the 2021 trade deadline but claimed him off waivers from Pittsburgh this past November after his ACL injury.
A middle infielder who was an occasional fill-in outfielder, Marcano has a career .217/.276/.356 slash line with five home runs and 34 RBIs in 149 games.
Oakland A’s pitcher Michael Kelly, Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, Padres pitching prospect Jay Groome and Phillies infielder Jose Rodriguez were each suspended one year for betting on MLB games that did not involve the team they were on at the time.
