Top plays from Tuesday’s exciting OTA practice
*At the start of 11-on-11 drills, Tommy DeVito hit Theo Johnson for what would have been a first down. The next play, DeVito hit Darius Slayton on a slant for a first down.
*Speaking of Johnson, the rookie tight end made several impressive catches on Tuesday, including one in a tight window for what would have been a first down. Later in practice, Johnson caught a pass from Drew Lock up the seam for a 20+ yard gain.
*The pass to Johnson was the first of three big throws from Lock within a few plays. Lock connected with Bryce Ford-Wheaton for a gain of 30+ yards, and soon after, the quarterback stepped up in the pocket to escape pressure before launching a pass 30+ yards downfield to Allen Robinson, who completed the catch. Lock also found Chris Manhertz and Dennis Houston for solid gains towards the end of practice.
*In what seems like a common theme throughout OTAs, Brian Burns got himself into the backfield for what would have been a sack on two separate plays.
“First, I would say he’s a great teammate, practices the way you want a pro to practice,” Daboll said a few weeks ago. “Particularly a player of his type caliber. I think he’s done a good job with the outside linebackers and his room of being a good mentor. He leads by example, but he also will speak up if he needs to speak up.
“He’s been a really good addition to our football team up to this point. Glad we have him. Whether it’s on defense, whether it’s talking to guys on offense, the offensive line about certain things, good person and a good player.”
*Dexter Lawrence got into the backfield and forced a throwaway during team drills, as did rookie linebacker Darius Muasau. Boogie Basham also likely would have had a sack.
*Darnay Holmes and Elijah Riley each recorded a pass breakup, while defensive lineman Casey Rogers batted a pass down at the line of scrimmage.
*Carter Coughlin made a nice play on the football to sniff out a screen pass and stop the play for no gain.
