Travis Kelce has a vision for his eventual NFL retirement

When Travis Kelce does decide to call it a career, the Chiefs tight end wants to do it on his own terms.

With chatter swirling about when Travis, 34, could potentially hang up his cleats, the three-time Super Bowl champion elaborated on his preferred retirement plan Wednesday on the “New Heights” podcast, citing his older brother, newly retired Eagles center Jason Kelce, as an example.

“I think you were very fortunate that you were able to go out on your terms and that’s the goal,” said Travis, who is preparing for his 12th season in the league. “If I can go out on my terms and not have something happen to my body, like a big-time injury to where I have to step away, that’s the biggest goal in football to be able to do it on my terms.”

Jason, 36, announced his NFL retirement in March after 13 seasons, all with the Eagles.

For the seven-time Pro Bowler, who also earned six First-Team All-Pro nods during his time in Philadelphia, his decision stemmed from the notion that he no longer believes he can execute at a high level.

When Travis reaches that point, he thinks that’ll be the time to step away.

“I love playing at it at a level where I know I can have a bunch of success,” the nine-time Pro Bowler said on Wednesday’s show.

“… I know I can go out there and catch a flat route and turn it into a 15-20-yard gain and make a few guys miss, the moment that I can’t do that, I think that’s when I’m going to be when I’m like, alright, what am I doing this for? I get excitement out of catching a ball, splitting a bunch of defenders and getting a huge first down when nobody expected me to do it. Or I scored a huge touchdown in a playoff game in the fourth quarter when the team needed it the most. The moment that I can’t do that, and I’m playing it at an average or a less of a successful level than I am right now, I think that’s when I’m probably going to call it quits.”

Travis said last week at Chiefs minicamp that he “can’t put a timeframe” on retirement.

“I love coming to work every single day. Obviously, I know there’s opportunities outside of football for me. I think you’ve gotta keep in perspective that I’m a little kid when I come in this building,” he said.

“I’m gonna do it until the wheels fall off. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen anytime soon. I can definitely understand that it’s toward the end of the road than the beginning of it. I just gotta make sure I’m set up for after football as well.”

Travis, who is already segueing into television with upcoming roles on Amazon’s “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” and Ryan Murphy’s “Grotesquerie,” finished the 2023 season with 93 receptions for 984 yards — the first season since 2015 that he failed to eclipse 1,000 yards.

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said last Wednesday he believes Travis has plenty left in the tank.

“He’s got like four or five more years and what is he talking about, right?’’ Jones said Wednesday, according to ESPN. “We can’t let TK go. It’s like we retire, we’ve got to retire together. Give me at least six, four years, then we’ll talk about it.’’

Travis has expressed interest in getting into broadcasting when his NFL career ends.

Jason, meanwhile, will make his ESPN debut this fall as an analyst on “Monday Night Football.”
