NFL analysts’ bold prediction includes New York Giants tanking, trading starting LB | Sporting News

The month of June means it’s the dead time around the NFL and the bold takes can fly before training camp arrives.

The New York Giants were the subject of some of the latest bold predictions from Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report, who suggested the Giants might tank if things aren’t going well at the trade deadline.

On top of that, Gagnon suggested the Giants could part ways with starting linebacker Bobby Okereke at the deadline if they aren’t in a position to compete.

In other words, the Giants admit—just a year-and-a-half after giving him a huge new contract—that quarterback Daniel Jones isn’t the answer. And if that’s the case, the team likely knows it has to gain more draft capital to land that next franchise QB.

The “problem” is there is plenty of talent outside of that potential for Big Blue, with Malik Nabers and Brian Burns sprucing things up this offseason on either side of the ball and most of a core including Dexter Lawrence and Andrew Thomas still in place.

The Giants might accidentally compete, even if Jones continues to be ineffective.

That could force the organization to tank down the stretch, the first chapter of which would come with a trade involving a veteran like Darius Slayton or Bobby Okereke as well as future draft capital in return for a potential top-five pick.

Though bold predictions aren’t necessarily supposed to become true—hence the reason they’re bold—it seems odd the Giants would part ways with Okereke in the middle of a four-year deal.

The contract isn’t a massive one at $10 million per season, and Okereke was extremely productive during his first campaign with the Giants.

The tanking issue is always more of a talking point than a realization. It’s difficult to tank in the NFL without it being obvious.

There’s only a month until training camp begins, and it can’t get here soon enough.
