Argentina beat Chile live updates

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has told reporters he doesn’t yet know about Lionel Messi’s fitness — but pointed towards the fact the 37-year-old ended his side’s 1-0 win over Chile by sprinting 50 meters to join a late attack.

Messi was the victim of some rough play in Monday’s game and, midway through the first half, received treatment on his upper right leg area. Messi finished the game but he has already missed six games this MLS season due to muscle injuries.

Scaloni, however, appeared to ease concerns over Messi’s fitness after the 1-0 victory.

He said: “I didn’t speak with him after the game. He ended up playing, through.

“You saw he had the 50-meter sprint there with Angel (Di Maria) and Lautaro (Martinez), and it’s the last image I have (in my head). I can’t say more because I haven’t seen him.”

Scaloni added that it was a “well-deserved victory” for Argentina, who have already secured progression to the Copa America knockout stage as Group A winners with a game to spare.

He said: “A well-deserved victory, I’d say. The truth is the game was not easy, and it was won during the least expected moment, I’d say, because the game was ending.

“But, like always, the team continued to create, continued to attack. In the last few days, the 12 first players began to open up a little more. I think the victory is deserved, because Argentina did all it could, but they (Chile) were a very tough rival. Chile did a great job.

“Ricardo (Gareca) is doing a great job (with the team) and, well, it’s like we always say – in the end, there is no easy game.”
