That sure is a lot of money to share.
The National Football League reportedly amassed approximately $13 billion in 2023 profits to distribute amongst its 32 member franchises. Sportico claims the NFL has made $400+ million payments to the New York Jets and all other clubs.
The Sportico report did not specify the exact amount Woody Johnson’s Jets received as it based the estimates on conversations about 2023 national revenues with four different teams. The organizations disclosed similar figures — $402 million, $404 million, $418 million and $425 million.
The estimated annual revenue share that each team earns has more than doubled since 2012 when $180 million payments were distributed. In 2022, Sportico listed that number at $374 million.
The Jets have proven to be a tremendously profitable investment for Johnson, who became a billionaire from his Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical holdings. Johnson spent $635 million to purchase the franchise in 2020 and its value has since increased to an estimated $6 billion.
In other NFL financial news, each team, including the Jets, could be on the hook for $450 million apiece. It depends on whether a recent legal ruling withstands the appeals process and forces NFL franchises to share the cost of a potential class-action payout to former Sunday Ticket subscribers on DirecTV.
