The New York Sports Club will permanently close three locations in Lee County.
In a WARN notice filed with the Florida Department of Commerce, the company shared plans to close three of its gyms, resulting in 108 layoffs.
The state requires companies to file an advance notice under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act when they plan to lay off 50 or more employees, so state and local assistance can be promptly provided to the affected workers.
The soon-to-close gyms (formerly known as Around the Clock Fitness) are located at: 9375 Six Mile Cypress Parkway and 1755 Boy Scout Drive in Fort Myers, and at 1140 Ceitus Terrace in Cape Coral. They’re the only ones in Florida.
Their last official day in business will be Aug. 31, the same day layoffs will take effect.
The layoffs will include one manager and three assistant general managers.
Based on number, the most affected workers are group exercise instructors (43), followed by service and sales representatives (11).
Others losing their jobs: housekeeping attendants, front desk supervisors, childcare associates, and professional trainers.
Additionally, the layoffs include several staff trainers, and a few others who work in facilities, administration and management.

The notice, written and signed by Melissa Williams, a vice president of human resources for the New York-based fitness company, did not include a reason for the closings.
According to the company’s website, the fitness club was established in 1973, as Town Squash Inc., to “bring the popular sportof squash to the New York masses.” It has locations in multiple states including New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Massachusetts, offering what it describes as friendly month-to-month memberships that “won’t break the bank.”
At one time, the New York Sports Club was one of several fitness brands operated by Town Sports International, which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020 – after it was bought out by investors.
Since then, the company has worked to turn itself around under new ownership and leadership.
