Worldwide tech outage: See list of Central New York agencies and companies affected

Syracuse, N.Y. — Many Central New York agencies and companies are affected by a worldwide technology outage.

The outages are reported to stem from a software update for Microsoft Windows operating systems issued by the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. The company’s software is used by many Fortune 500 companies, including major airlines, global banks, hospitals and healthcare firms and energy companies

Here are some of the ways the outage is impacting the region:

• Flights out of Syracuse on American Airlines, United and Delta Airlines have been canceled or delayed, according to the carriers’ websites.
• In Syracuse, some surgeries and lab appointments at all Upstate Medical University locations are delayed, said Darryl Geddes, a spokesperson for Upstate. Those with appointments this morning should call their physician’s office, Upstate said. (Crouse Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospitals are unaffected, according to a spokesperson for each hospital.)
• M&T Bank and Wilmington Trust have some outages, said Thea Pecht, a spokesperson. Mobile banking, ATMs, branches, and call centers are still available, she said. Other banks may be impacted.
• Onondaga County Justice Center were down this morning, court officials said. That was impacting their ability to bring defendants who were being held to court appearances.
• Syracuse police officers were filing reports by writing them and emailing them to themselves, said Kieran Coffey, a spokesperson for Syracuse police. The system they use to write reports is down, he said.
• The state Department of Motor Vehicles said it is unable to complete transactions online or in person. In Madison County, the state’s DMV office in Wampsville closed for the day, officials said.
