NFL Super Bowl champ arrested on felony warrant in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — NFL legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor was arrested in Florida on Wednesday on a felony warrant charge for failing to report his residence change as a registered sex offender, according to the Pembroke Pines Police Department.

Taylor, 65, turned himself into the Broward County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Lauderdale and was released on bail on Thursday, The Athletic reports.

The former New York Giants star linebacker and two-time Super Bowl champion was previously arrested on the same charges of failing to report an address change in December 2021.

“As with the previous incident involving the same allegations, Mr. Taylor did not knowingly commit any criminal offense,” Taylor’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, said in a statement. “This situation is a significant misunderstanding. We are confident that, once the prosecutors review the exculpatory evidence demonstrating Mr. Taylor’s innocence, he will once again achieve a favorable outcome.”

Taylor was required to register as a sex offender in 2011 after he pled guilty to one misdemeanor count of sexual misconduct and one count of soliciting a prostitute in the third degree in a New York court. He was registered as a Level 1 sex offender, the lowest of the three levels, and was sentenced to six years of probation in his home state of Florida.

Taylor, the No. 2 overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft, played 13 seasons in the NFL and is widely considered one of the best defensive players in league history. In his 13 seasons, all with the Giants, Taylor was selected to 10 NFL Pro Bowls and was an eight-time All-Pro linebacker. He was named the Defensive Player of the Year on three occasions and won the NFL MVP award in 1986 after recording a then-record 20.5 sacks in a single season. Taylor also helped lead the Giants to Super Bowl wins in 1987 and 1991. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
