The Dallas Cowboys reportedly added to their defensive line depth Wednesday, and they turned toward a division rival to do so.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Cowboys landed defensive tackle Jordan Phillips in a trade from the New York Giants.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Giants will receive a 2026 sixth-round pick while a seventh-round pick will also be sent to the Cowboys:

This means New York moved on from Phillips before he even appeared in a single game for the team, as it signed him in April.

There was a time when Phillips would have been seen as a major addition. After all, he posted 9.5 sacks during the 2019 season as a member of the Buffalo Bills and helped lead them to the playoffs.

However, he has struggled to replicate that impact since while playing for the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 and 2021 before returning to the Bills again in 2022 and 2023. The 2015 second-round pick also played for the Miami Dolphins during the first three-plus seasons of his career.

Phillips was a secondary contributor for the Bills last season and finished with 15 tackles, 2.5 sacks and five passes defended in 14 games.

He was not as effective as even the modest numbers indicate, as Pro Football Focus gave him a lowly player grade of 35.8. It was quite the dropoff from even the 62.7 he finished with during the 2022 season.

Still, the Cowboys took a chance on the 31-year-old and surely hope he can provide some veteran depth to their defensive tackle rotation.

Dallas starts its regular season on Sept. 8 against the Cleveland Browns.
