If you’ve been wondering what Jakob Johnson has been up to the past few months, you’re not alone. The two-year starting fullback for the Raiders was not brought back this offseason and with a few weeks to the start of this season had yet to sign with another team.

Friday the New York Giants officially announced they had signed Johnson to the roster.

Johnson is a damn fine fullback. But unfortunately for him, fullback is becoming a rare breed in the NFL these days. Most teams no longer carry them.

The Raiders are one of those teams, opting instead to utilize tight ends when they need someone to lead block for the running back.

The Giants a referring to Johnson as a TE/FB, though he has caught just 19 passes in five NFL seasons and doesn’t line up on the line as an extra pass blockr. Though, who knows, perhaps he added that to his repertoire. It would be smart, after all, if only to try and acclimate to the NFL’s changing dynamic and continue his playing career.
