My analysis
The New York Giants got some good news this week. Not only will starting quarterback Daniel Jones return to game action for the first time since tearing his ACL in November, but rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers could play as well after twisting his ankle in practice.
The Giants haven’t announced just how long Jones and the starters are expected to play for, but the signal-caller is ready to go.
“I’m ready to play as much as Dabs wants me to play,” Jones said. “I don’t know (how long he’ll be on the field.) That’s probably a better question for him and kind of how he’s seeing the whole situation. But I’m ready to play and looking forward to getting out there.”
The quarterback has gotten to work with his offensive line and wide receivers in practice, but game action can’t be replicated. Even preseason snaps will go a long way.
“I think it’s a little bit faster,” Jones said. “And the pass rush is real. They can hit you in the game. So just feeling that, sensing that, but I think that just comes down to getting the ball out on time, moving well in the pocket. All the things you work on in a practice situation get tested in a game when you can get hit.”
Head coach Brian Daboll said “there’s definitely a chance” that Nabers will play in Saturday’s game.
For the Houston Texans, their starters are expected to play at least a quarter against the Giants.
C.J. Stroud is coming off a tremendous rookie season. The second-year QB went 2 for 4 through the air for 41 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown to Tank Dell in the first quarter, last week.
Even beyond Stroud, the Texans have Davis Mills and Case Keenum competing for the backup job in Houston. Of course, the Texans have a strong stable of wide receivers as well.
Expect the two teams to come out firing on Saturday in Houston with both offenses getting the start.
