New York Giants named landing spot for veteran cornerback in free agency | Sporting News

As the initial 53-man roster gets finalized Tuesday afternoon, the New York Giants have major question marks in the secondary.

Specifically, the cornerback room is one of the positions on the depth chart that is filled with inexperience as they take on Shane Bowen’s new defensive scheme.

Adding some veteran presence to the room might not be a bad idea, which is why they could go after free-agent cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to add some depth, according to Matt Holder of Bleacher Report.

“The Giants are very young at cornerback heading into the regular season, with Cor’Dale Flott (third season), Deonte Banks (second season) and Dru Phillips (rookie) listed as the starters on the team’s depth chart,” Holder wrote. “So, it’d be smart to add someone like Witherspoon who has 57 career starts. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the seven-year pro is coming off a career-high 14 passes defended in 2023.”

Witherspoon is best suited for a zone-heavy, Cover-3 scheme. He has extremely long arms to help him in press coverage, but he struggles with consistency when asked to provide coverage in man-heavy schemes.

The former Day 2 pick has experience playing on both sides of the formation and is coming off one of the best seasons of his career after allowing a 76.7 passer rating on 99 targets with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023.

The Giants seem content rolling with Deonte Banks and a combination of Cor’Dale Flott and Nick McCloud on the outside, but Witherspoon would be a viable depth piece if needed.
