New York Giants could sign veteran DT to address ‘biggest weakness’ | Sporting News
The New York Giants defense is a group filled with both questions and intrigue going into the new season.
One of the biggest topics of debate on the Giants depth chart comes at the defensive tackle position and the players working behind star Dexter Lawrence.
For now, the Giants are likely to use a rotation that consists of D.J. Davidson, Jordon Riley and undrafted free agent rookie Elijah Chatman.
That’s partly why Matt Holder of Bleacher Report believes the Giants should go after veteran Chris Wormley in free agency looking to rebound after a down season with the Carolina Panthers.
“The Giants are pretty thin at defensive tackle so the front office should at least explore bringing in Wormley. The 30-year-old is coming off a couple of tough years, suffering a torn ACL in 2022 and not getting much playing time in Carolina last season. However, if healthy, he can at least contribute as a run defender and add some experience to the position group,” Holder wrote.
The Giants are thin at the defensive tackle position, and the group will be working in a new defensive under Shane Bowen, who is taking over coordinator duties following the departure of Wink Martindale this offseason.
Wormley, 30, might be an option for the Giants if they feel they desperately need to add depth. They could use some depth at nose tackle, especially given how poorly they played against the run last year.
It’s unlikely the Giants make any major moves before the Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings, but it does highlight an area they may need to focus on throughout the season.
