NFL Week 2 power rankings: Not much has changed for the New York Giants
Opening week confirmed one thing: the media seems to be right about the New York Giants.
The Giants put together an awful performance in their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings, as this week’s power rankings have them among the three worst teams in the NFL.
Fortunately, the Carolina Panthers exist, as at least there’s one team below the Giants in most of this week’s power rankings!

Why the Giants lost in Week 1: Daniel Jones was under duress constantly, completing only five of his 15 passes when pressured and averaging 1.8 yards per attempt. Even when Jones was able to make a play, the Giants dropped five passes.

For the second straight year, the Giants were roasted in their home opener — and Daniel Jones was equally bad in both games. On Sunday, he threw a pair of interceptions against the Vikings and barely hit the 50 percent completion mark. The first pick was run back for a score that drove a stake into the Giants’ hearts when they were still just 15 points behind. Jones’ legs can be his occasional saving grace, but he didn’t do much with those, either. Let’s be fair, though: How many QBs could make this offense hum? Outside of the truly elite, the answer is likely “not many.” The revamped O-line looked like it needed more vamping. The ground game was virtually non-existent, and the defense was carved up by Sam Darnold in a stadium that he’s been booed out of more than once. I wouldn’t have known Brian Daboll was calling plays had he not told us he would be doing so. Outside of a few Malik Nabers grabs, it was about as bad as you could have imagined, with only the Panthers’ misery sparing the Giants from the basement.

It’s hard to feel good about anything with the Giants after that opener. General manager Joe Schoen, head coach Brian Daboll and quarterback Daniel Jones should all be worried. Also, a defense that allowed Sam Darnold to torch it might be a real problem all season.

Wow, was that bad against the Vikings. This is going to be a long season and one that could cost Brian Daboll his job.

Best newcomer performance: CB Dru Phillips
There were not a lot of choices considering the way Week 1 played out for the Giants, but Phillips was one of the few bright spots. The third-round pick had four tackles, one for a loss, and a forced fumble playing out of the slot in his first career game. He produced that in only 15 defensive snaps. The physical nature the Giants liked from him coming out of Kentucky immediately showed.

They got to spend Friday night watching Barkley and S Xavier McKinney thrive in new uniforms. They got to spend Sunday afternoon watching QB Daniel Jones flounder in a new uniform – the Giants’ hideous alternates unveiled to celebrate their 100th season … and that celebration may already be over as HC Brian Daboll is already being asked about Jones’ status as QB1.
