This Highly Demure Swerve Took Over New York Fashion Week

Autumn is here. Jackets are, blessedly, in rotation once more. Trousers no longer evoke a sense of sweat-related dread. And scarves, as they say, are back on the menu, boys.

The cool kids on the ground at New York Fashion Week have made a point of dusting off their bandanas and scarves to act as styling cherries on top of their fits.

From the old traditional western trick of the bandana knotted around the neck, to the more modern take around the forehead (which the girls also joined in on), little cotton or linen scarves have been everywhere in the Big Apple.

There’s even been a couple of guys, including Lakers center Jarred Vanderbilt, throwing it back to the Old Hollywood vibe of tying the scarf under their chin, framing the face à la Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face. (Very demure? Sorry, sorry, we’ll stop.)

It’s a good trick and—even better—an easy one, too. Depending on the size of your bandana, tying it around your neck or head is a shortcut to adding an element of interest to your fit. Adding a shock of red or bright green via a scarf is a simple way to bring more colour into your wardrobe.

Meanwhile if your everyday tee-jeans-cap combo has been feeling boring lately, tying a scarf around your head—over your cap, and under your chin—adds a little fun into the mix, not to mention plays up the proportions a bit more.

If you’re not into the vibe of the bandana being in the head or neck region, there are a few other options: from the “bag accessory” trend that is running rampant, which just involves you tying the scarf around the handle of your bag, to the more simple around the wrist version.

So the next time you’re umming and ahhing in front of the mirror, thinking your fit needs a little something, just do as they do in New York.
