Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. has been ruled out of the Washington Commanders’ Week 2 home opener against the New York Giants, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed during his Friday press conference.

Defensive end Clelin Ferrell and safety Quan Martin were added to the injury report with a knee and hamstring injury, respectively. Both are listed as questionable for Sunday.

Forbes, who appeared to injure his wrist during the Commanders’ matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was a full participant during Wednesday’s practice but limited on Thursday and absent on Friday, as he underwent surgery to repair the injury.

Quinn added that Forbes will not need to be placed on Injured Reserve.

Forbes’ role as one of the starting cornerbacks will be filled by veterans Michael Davis and Noah Igbinoghene while he recovers from surgery. Igbinoghene replaced Forbes in Week 1 and finished the game with a tackle and pass breakup.

Igbinoghene and Davis are two of the Commanders’ most experienced defensive backs on the roster. The two have played in a combined 146 games with Davis operating as a starter for the Los Angeles Chargers over the last five seasons. Davis has also recorded at least interception in every season since 2019.

Rookie defensive tackle Johnny Newton continues to be ramped up by the coaching staff and is on the right track in his recovery. Quinn sounded encouraged by the second-round pick’s progress and added that the team will put him through more work on Saturday before making a final determination on his game status.

Should Newton be active, his presence would bolster a defensive line that produced just one sack against the Buccaneers. The group will need the extra help against Jones, who is 5-1-1 against Washington in his career.

The remaining players on Washington’s injury report — tight end Zach Ertz, safety Tyler Owens, offensive tackle Brandon Coleman, running back Brian Robinson Jr. and offensive tackle Trent Scott — were all full participants on Friday and will be available against the Giants.
