Knicks Sign Another Former Sun

Never mind twin suns; the New York Knicks are raising four of them.

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Knicks continue to outdo Tatooine by signing Landry Shamet to a one-year deal. Shamet joins Mikal Bridges, Keita Bate-Diop, and Cameron Payone as former desert-dwellers to appear on the active Knicks roster.

Signing Shamet gives the Knicks 15 men on their active roster as training camp in Charleston looms. He joins a packed house in the backcourt but Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reported that Shamet is expected to make the final roster.

Shamet, 27, spent last season with the Washington Wizards and, per SNY’s Ian Begley, sought a “winning environment” as he set forth on his seventh NBA season. Last season was the first where Shamet did not partake in a playoff run, averaging 7.1 points and 1.2 assists in just under 16 minutes with the woebegone Wizards.

Phoenix had dealt Shamet to Washington, along with Chris Paul (who was immediately waived) in the deal that sent Bradley Beal out west. Washigton waived Shamet in July and he lingered on the free agent ledger until Saturday.

Though he shot a career-worst from deep last season (33.8 percent), Shamet has had success from the outside as the Knicks seek scoring depth now that Immanuel Quickley is locked up in Toronto. Coming to Manhattan marks a return to New York City for Shamet, who previously donned the black of the Brooklyn Nets.

Shamet has been a well-traveled vet since entering the Association with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018. The first-round pick was dealt to the Los Angeles Clippers in a deal that acquired Tobias Harris in the midst of his freshman campaign but that didn’t stop him from landing second-team All-Rookie honors and finishing 11th in three-point percentage (44.2).
