A short week comes to a close for the New England Patriots. They are set to kick off Week 3 on Thursday Night Football in what is currently their lone primetime game of the season.

They will do so against the New York Jets in what will be their home opener. New England will face off against Aaron Rodgers for the first time in his new colors.

First Quarter

The Patriots won the toss and deferred, putting Aaron Rodgers and the Jets offense on the field first. After picking up a pair of first downs, a penalty drawn by Anfernee Jennings and a sack by Deatrich Wise moved the Jets backwards. On 3rd-and-19, Rodgers’ quick pass was complete short of the sticks.

New England’s first drive was a short one, as they quickly went three-and-out on three plays that stood little chance.

The Jets next drive started similarly with a pair of first downs. New England’s run defense then felt the loss of Ja’Whaun Bentley with the addition of an unnecessary roughness penalty on Jahlani Tavai moved them inside the red area. Rodgers eventually hit Allen Lazard on a quick hitter who broke free of Alex Austin and took it 10 yards for a score. [Patriots 0 : 7 Jets]

New England’s next drive started with a screen to DeMario Douglas, who reversed it midfield to still only gain a yard. Completions to Ja’Lynn Polk and Hunter Henry then picked up the Patriots first first-down of the night. The drive then stalled, as Brissett missed an open Austin Hooper off play-action before being sacked on fourth-down.

Second Quarter

Bryce Baringer’s punt started the Jets’ drive inside their own 10-yard line, where they got backed up further after a hold. On 3rd-and-6, Rodgers rolled to his left and hit Lazard who took it 27 yards on the run. Tackling continued to be an issue for New England’s defense while Rodgers picked them apart in the middle of the field to move the Jets moved inside the 10 — where Breece Hall rolled in for a touchdown. [Patriots 0 : 14 Jets]

Injury update: S Jabrill Peppers (ankle) is questionable to return.

Facing their first two-score deficit of the season, New England went back to the run game to start their next drive. Stevenson broke off a 13-yard run, but a face mask on the back negated the gain. After a second-down sack that was quickly blown dead, Tyquan Thornton drew a 34-yard pass interference penalty to set the Patriots up outside the red area. Another sack moved New England backwards, however, leading to a field goal which Joey Slye hit through from 44 yards. [Patriots 3 : 14 Jets]

New England’s defense set up a big opening 3rd-and-9 with 2:05 left in the half, but Rodgers split the safeties over the middle of the field for a 22-yard completion to Tyler Conklin. After the two-minute warning, New York worked outside the red area but had to settle for a field goal — which Greg Zuerlein missed from 45 yards.

Taking over with seven seconds left, Brissett hit Douglas on a quick slant for 12 yards. A Hail Mary attempt to close the half then fell incomplete.

Third Quarter

New England started the second half with the ball but the limited success continued. They quickly went three-and-out with more pressure leading to a third-down incompletion.

The Jets first drive of the second half saw them methodically march into the red area behind their run game and a pair of third-down conversions by Rodgers through the air. Down at the two, Rodgers fit one into a key hole to beat Christian Gonzalez and find Garrett Wilson for a touchdown. [Patriots 3 : 21 Jets]

The Patriots offense found life back with the ball, as they finally hit a play-action pass as Brissett found Douglas on a crosser for 22 yards. A tight end screen on the next play saw Austin Hooper reverse field to gain another 19 yards. Set up just outside the red-area, New England was then called for three straight holds — the last declined after a sack. They then punted.

Fourth Quarter

Rodgers continued to hurt New England’s defense outside the pocket as he converted another third-down to start the Jets next possession, while also taking a late hit from Joshua Uche to move the ball across midfield. After an unnecessary roughness on New York, Uche made up for it several plays later as he got home to sack Rodgers to set up a 3rd-and-33 and eventual punt.

Back with the ball, a handoff to Stevenson resulted in a fumble — his third in as many weeks — which was recovered by the Jets.

New York took over at New England’s 37-yard line after the turnover. An 18-yard completion to Mike Williams on third-down moved them inside the red area. On the next third-down, Rodgers went back to Williams in the end zone but Jonathan Jones broke it up on the way to the ground. Zuerlein then added a 28-yard field goal. [Patriots 3 : 24 Jets]

An eight-yard completion to Douglas followed by a run from Antonio Gibson picked up a quick first-down for New England. A third-down sack then led to another punt.
