Some of the priciest trades in this season of the 2024 NFL are probably going to form the league. Brian Burns is something of a quite notable example as he was traded by the Carolina Panthers from the New York Giants. It involved multiple draft picks: a 2024 second-round and fifth-round pick and a 2025 conditional fifth-round pick. Burns, who has long been a high-pressure rate leader, is likely to make a big impact on a Giants defense that really struggled last season.

Another big trade is L’Jarius Sneed switching from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Tennessee Titans. The Titans had a terrible pass defense last season and are trying to strengthen up their backend with the idea of potentially building a strong secondary, even potentially making Sneed a vital piece of that defense. Their extreme strategy with free agency and the trade market indicates they needed to upgrade significantly on their current roster.
The New York Jets signed pass rusher Haason Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles. Reddick is a player who had spectacular sack numbers over the last few years. So this move fills a gap left by Jets’ former sack leader Bryce Huff. The New York Jets want to retain that third-ranked overall unit last season in that role.
Another important pick-up from the Lions via trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is cornerback Carlton Davis. He would give Detroit depth and experience on a secondary that ranked very poorly in 2023 and wasn’t even consistently really good when healthy throughout 2022.
But the Pittsburgh Steelers are also rolling the dice on quarterback Justin Fields for the Chicago Bears. He’s gonna be an open question as to whether he plays for them, but the addition certainly must inspire veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to raise his game or possibly start if it’s needed.
These are examples of building out a weakness and posturing to assist in achieving success during next season.
