Recently-Waived New York Knicks Veteran Denies Reunion

Just a week after signing with the team in the middle of September, the New York Knicks waived veteran forward Marcus Morris a few days ago. This move happened as a formality to make room for Karl-Anthony Towns, who the Knicks acquired in a blockbuster trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Though he was just on a training camp deal, the Knicks reportedly had interest in bringing Morris back. This feeling was not mutual.

According to The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III, Morris “opted against re-joining” the team for training camp.

Marcus Morris opted against re-joining Knicks on a camp deal, per sources, after he was waived due to financial implications of the Karl-Anthony Towns trade. Morris became unlikely to make the Knicks roster. He is now a free agent and aiming to join a team before the NBA season.

What’s Next for Marcus Morris?

Morris is still a solid player who can help any contending team. The 35-year-old played well for the Cleveland Cavaliers during his short stint with the team last season. This was especially true in the playoffs. Additionally, he is a good veteran presence. However, he was unable to find a team until September, just a couple of weeks before the start of training camp. At this point, it seems unlikely he will find a new home before the start of training camp. However, this does not mean he will not have any other suitors.

The Kansas alum’s twin brother, Markieff Morris, re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks earlier in the offseason. Markieff has been open about wanting to team up with his brother in Dallas. Granted, given that the Mavericks had all offseason to add Marcus and did not do so, it seems this could just be more of a pipe dream for the Morris twins. However, now that Marcus is officially a free agent once again, the Mavericks have the option to reunite the Morris brothers once again.

The Last Word On Marcus Morris and the Knicks

Regardless of whether the Knicks have Morris on the squad or not, they enter the 2024-25 season as legitimate title contenders. Last season, the Knicks finished with a 50-32 record. This was despite battling numerous injuries all season. Additionally, they earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Following their offseason acquisitions of Towns and Mikal Bridges, the Knicks are considered a favorite to represent the Eastern Conference during next year’s NBA Finals.

However, there is some serious competition ahead of them. Most notably, the reigning champion Boston Celtics and the new-look Philadelphia 76ers. Nonetheless, the Knicks are well-equipped to make some noise and follow up on their impressive campaign last season.
