Manager-needy Marlins eyeing Guardians’ Craig Albernaz
Guardians bench coach Craig Albernaz is considered a big candidate for Marlins manager. He’s linked to GM Peter Bendix as a former Rays minors coach and as bullpen and catching coach in San Francisco for Gabe Kapler, now Marlins assistant GM.
One other name heard for the Fish is their bench coach, Luis Urueta. One person’s assessment. “Fantastic … he will be [Carlos] Mendoza one day.”
Former Angels manager Phil Nevin and Cardinals bench coach Daniel Descalso are among a long list of White Sox managerial targets.
One big target is Rangers bench coach Will Venable, the seeming heir apparent in Texas who turned down the Mets.
Buster Posey as Giants baseball president feels like Derek Jeter all over again — an iconic baseball winner without experience. Could work.
Posey’s involvement in Matt Chapman’s $151 million, six-year deal, though, was somewhat exaggerated as the terms were agreed upon by agent Scott Boras and then-Giants baseball president Farhan Zaidi before Posey finished things by telling Chapman they’d accede to the no-trade provision, firming up other side issues and letting him know he was about to take a bigger role (which was true).
The Giants are looking for a GM. One name that makes sense is Thad Levine, the well-regarded exec who departed the Twins.
Chaim Bloom deserved the second shot in charge he’ll get with the Cardinals after 2025, as his Red Sox years look better considering the rebuilt farm system.
Boston bigs were playing it conservatively in Bloom’s years as they seemed to be concentrating on soccer. But if Boston doesn’t spend big this time around, something’s wrong.
