Saoirse Ronan’s grungy tartan dress had an unexpected twist
On Monday night, Saoirse Ronan attended a New York screening of her new film, The Outrun, wearing a grungy tartan dress that featured three different fabrics coming together for a deconstructed, directional look.
The design in question came from the autumn/winter 2024 collection by Hodakova – the Stockholm-based label founded by the Swedish designer Ellen Hodakova Larsson in 2021.
At the very top, the halter-style design featured a black silk neckline that gave it an elegant cocktail dress appeal. This was cut off with an asymmetrical line of stitching, at which point the material switched to a blue-and-red tartan that covered Ronan’s torso, with gathering at one side. At the bottom of the bodice, there was also an attached upside-down patch, emblazoned with the Union Jack flag.
The tartan fabric wrapped around Ronan’s back in soft ruffles, and it could easily have ended there as a playful mini. However, the look had one more surprise in store. At the bottom of the dress, the third fabric came into play – what appeared to be a barn coat, complete with corduroy collar and zips – giving the impression of a jacket tied around her waist, slipping down her hips.
She accessorised her look with black pumps and a red lip, with her hair pulled back into a low-key updo.
Just last month, Ellen Hodakova Larsson was named the winner of the prestigious LVMH Prize, an award presented annually to a rising talent who demonstrates exceptional creativity. Through her eponymous label, the designer has shown a commitment to sustainable processes, and become known for repurposing materials and upcycling existing garments – whether that’s a top made from spoons (previously seen on Cate Blanchett), a skirt made from belt buckles, or a grungy dress made from tartan fabric and a barn coat.
