Women’s Golf Competes in Pair of Invitationals in New York Over Weekend – Keene State College

REXFORD, N.Y. – The Keene State College women’s golf team finished seventh at a pair of Northeast Women’s Golf Conference (NWGC) events this weekend, but that does not tell the full story.  KSC did not have enough healthy golfers to record a team total last season, and in their first season as a program compiled scores of 479 and 487 at the same event.  This time around, they shot a 396 at the NWGC Fall Classic on Friday at the Van Patten Golf Club in Clifton Park and followed it up with a 399 as a team on Saturday at the Mohawk River Country Club.

Madison Mousley paced the Owls both days, shooting a 91 and tying for 15th on Friday before finishing in deadlock with two others for 11th while shooting a 92 on Saturday.  Friday, Mackenzie Hagearty followed close behind Mousley with a 94, while Abby Weiterman finished with a 104, Jodi Mercier a 107, and Jasmine Shtufaj a 109.

Suffolk University won the classic in Clifton Park, finishing with a 329 as a team to edge out the State University of New York at Cortland’s 337.  KSC was just seven strokes from sixth and 36 from third at that event.  Cortland shot a 339 at the Saturday event to edge Suffolk (345) by six strokes.  The Owls, in seventh, were just four strokes from fifth as Husson University, St. John Fisher College, and KSC all finished within four strokes of each other.  The Owls were 23 strokes behind third-place Utica University (376).  The last time they scored on this weekend, they were 47 and 57 strokes behind fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Beyond Mousley’s 92 on Saturday, Shtufaj finished with a 101 while Hagearty and Mercier each had a 103.  KSC had three birdies on the day, one apiece from Mousley, Weiterman, and Shtufaj, and six pars.  The Owls were competitive on Par 3’s and Par 4’s, but their score was hindered by an average score of seven on Par 5’s, with their total on such holes only better than Westfield State University.

“It was very windy and there were difficult greens,” said KSC head coach Jeff Timmer.  “I am proud of the girls for dealing with the difficult conditions.  We will continue to try and improve.  I truly believe our team hits the ball as well as many of the teams, but we lose many shots around the green.”

The NWGC championship event will be held in the spring.  KSC continues their season on both the women’s and men’s sides next weekend (Saturday, October 19-Sunday, October 20) when they travel to Cape Cod and The Captains Golf Course for the NEIGA championship.
