NFL power rankings Week 8: Should Eagles soar to elite spot after rout of N.Y. Giants? | Sporting News

The Philadelphia Eagles (4-2) have more going for them entering Week 8 than they’ve had in almost a full calendar year.

For starters, the Eagles have won back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 2023, fresh off trouncing the New York Giants, 28-3, in their most complete performance of the season.

Philly’s defense has been excellent since the bye week, racking up 13 sacks and not allowing a touchdown over its past two games.

The offense got back to being a power running team against the Giants, and the result was 269 total yards rushing and an efficient Jalen Hurts stat line that saw him attempt only 14 passes.

Have the Eagles shown enough to push for a top-5 spot in expert power rankings? The consensus early Monday morning: Not yet.

Here’s what NFL analysts and writers are saying about Philly’s standing relative to the rest of the league entering Week 8:

NFL Power Rankings Week 8: Philadelphia Eagles

Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News: No. 10 (up 1 spot)

Iyer: “The Eagles got the first Saquon Barkley revenge game out of the way and want to keep up that rushing momentum to help their defense with the Bengals next.”

Taylor Wirth, NBC Sports: No. 8 (down 1 spot)

Wirth: “Saquon Barkley is such a gift to this offense. Jalen Hurts really doesn’t have to do much when his supporting cast is healthy.”

Peter Dewey, Sports Illustrated: No. 8 (up 3 spots)

Dewey: Philly cruised to an easy win in Week 7 over the New York Giants while Saquon Barkley torched his former team. If the offense gets going, Philly is going to be in the mix for the top spot in the NFC.”

Matt Johnson, Sportsnaut: No. 8 (no change)

Johnson: “We’ve kept the Philadelphia Eagles around the top 10 of our NFL power rankings for one simple reason, talent. Even after Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox retired, the Eagles have a lot of experience in their locker room to help on both sides of the ball. Plus, Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore are superior play-callers to what they had a year ago. The Eagles probably can’t beat the elite tier of the best NFL teams, but there’s more than enough talent to win 9-10 games and overcome Nick Sirianni.”

Lou Scataglia, NFL Spin Zone: No. 12  (up 1 spot)

Scataglia: “Perhaps the idea that the Philadelphia Eagles were dead in the water was a bit premature. Or they just played the New York Giants … Or a little bit of both? The Eagles are now 4-2, which is great news for them because all you need is a ticket to the dance at the end of the year. They are on track for that. But the key for this Eagles team going forward is going to be Jalen Hurts playing mistake-free football. Hurts only threw 14 passes in the Eagles’ dominating road win over the Giants, and Saquon Barkley did a lot of heavy lifting for the Philly offense. You expect this team to play well coming off of a bye week, but are we going to see more of this from Jalen Hurts going forward? As in, less of him throwing the ball? Again, he only threw 14 passes in this game and completed just 10. For the first time in forever, Hurts didn’t have an interception or a fumble, and the final score reflects what the Eagles are capable of when they’re not giving the ball away.”

Consensus: No. 9
