Cup of Cavs: Darius Garland’s late-game defense helped secure victory vs. Knicks
The Cleveland Cavaliers will take on LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers tonight. First, let’s take a look at the news and links of the day.
The first sip
Darius Garland’s offense has got most of the headlines coming out of Monday’s game against the New York Knicks and rightly so. His 34-point performance was impressive. But his defense was also noteworthy.
Kenny Atkinson mentioned unprompted at media day that he thought Garland was a good defender.
“Defensively I’ve always rated him as a plus defender,” Atkinson said. “[He’s a] competitor, elite instincts defensively. He’s still a young guy developing he’s body so he’s going to keep getting stronger.”
Garland validated Atkinson’s belief in him on Monday. He spent the majority of the time on the court covering 6’6” wing Mikal Bridges and more than held his own. Garland also recorded two steals, a block, and multiple good contests in the final five minutes to secure the victory.
Garland was in the correct position each play and wasn’t getting overpowered on ball by any of the Knicks’ offensive players. It’s easier to play that way when you have the back line Cleveland does, but it’s good to see Garland show that he can fit in on that end. Especially in a defense that is much more willing to switch on screens.
Cavs news
The Charge have put the floor down in Public Auditorium. It should be a nice venue if the pictures are any indication of things.
In other important news, it’s confirmed that Jarrett Allen is a cat owner. You love to see that.
