What Anthony Volpe’s mom thought about son’s historic night: ‘so surreal’
Anthony Volpe hugged his mother Isabelle in the hallway outside the Yankees clubhouse not long after he delivered the biggest hit of his life — and the biggest of this Yankees season.
Volpe’s grand slam in the bottom of the third propelled the Yankees to an 11-4 Game 4 win over the Dodgers to extend the World Series — and added another milestone to what has been an incredible road for the New York City native who grew up in New Jersey, dreaming of playing for the Yankees.
And his parents, Isabelle and Michael, were in the family section at the Stadium to see it.
“This so surreal,’’ Isabelle said Tuesday night. “We cheered for the Yankees before he was born. This whole thing is a trip. Us taking him to all those events, spending money to meet [Derek] Jeter when he was eight years old and he wouldn’t even go up to him because he was too shy. Now he’s out there doing it. It’s just …”
Not only were they there, but Isabelle said Michael saw the grand slam coming from the family section.
“My husband said he’d better swing at the first pitch because it’s gonna be a fastball,’’ Isabelle said. “And then, ‘Boom.’ We just looked at each other and then there was beer flying in the air and everyone was hugging. It was pandemonium.”
The pitch was a Daniel Hudson slider, but Volpe was indeed looking for a fastball.
Volpe’s grandfather, also named Anthony, witnessed the blast, as well.
“We needed a big hit, the whole team needed it and he gave it to them,” the senior Volpe said. “You couldn’t hear yourself think after that.”

To top it off, the entire crowd began chanting “Volpe” later in the game, as the Yankees were on their way to forcing Game 5, also in The Bronx.
“To say the least, this is overwhelming,’’ Isabelle Volpe. “I can only imagine how he’s feeling. We’ve been pinching each other through this whole thing. You dream about it, everyone dreams about it, but no one thinks it’s gonna happen. His hard work, determination and so much support has all led to this insane time.”
