The New York Giants face the Washington Commanders in Week 9 with much work still to be done at 2-6. As if scoring weren’t a problem, injuries against them include kicker Greg Joseph lost for a few weeks with an abdominal injury. Rutgers rookie Jude McAtamney is making his NFL debut, and things need to jell quickly for the Giants, or they will continue to slide further down.
The Commanders are looking to push for the playoffs. McAtamney is a Northern Irish professional American football placekicker for the New York Giants of the National Football League. He is a former Gaelic footballer who switched to American football and represented the Chowan Hawks and Rutgers Scarlet Knights at the college level.

Jude McAtamney is set to make his NFL debut
New York Giants announced that starting kicker Greg Joseph has been ruled out for the Sunday game against the Washington Commanders due to an abdomen injury. Punter Jamie Gillan also inactive for the game, a break may come the way of Swatragh man Jude McAtamney as he was likely to make his debut in the NFL. He was 24 years of age and was on the Giants’ practice squad during this summer. He got great chances by playing during preseason games after signing as a free agent. He is eligible for a three-season practice squad spot and can be promoted to the active roster.
“I’m just preparing every week to be ready, even if I’m not playing,” McAtamney told BBC Sport NI in New York in October. “Every week is a learning opportunity, and I feel like I’m learning and getting better as time goes on.” In May 2020, McAtamney took an interest in American football after noticing that, on Twitter, Irish punter David Shanahan accepted an athletic scholarship to play college football in the U.S. for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
He bought some equipment off of eBay and started practicing at a local Gaelic football field. He recorded himself and forwarded the video to Shanahan. Shanahan referred McAtamney to ProKick Australia, a program developed to help develop college football punters and placekickers.
In July 2021, McAtamney accepted a scholarship offer to play for Chowan University in North Carolina. Chowan University was an NCAA Division II program. He appeared in nine games that first season and made 6-of-10 field goal attempts and all 47 extra point tries with 60 kickoffs and 19 touchbacks. Following the season, he entered the NCAA transfer portal and trained at ProKick in Australia for the off-season of 2022.
McAtamney impressed the coaches by making all 10 attempts in front of scouts. He was not drafted, but signed as an undrafted free agent by New York Giants afterwards. McAtamney was assigned the New York Giants exempt/international roster spot under the auspices of the International Player Pathway Program (IPPP).
