NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue, New York Liberty and Brooklyn Nets owner Clara Wu Tsai, local officials and students from Fresh Creek School P.S.325 celebrated the unveiling of fully renovated basketball courts at Breukelen Ballfield in East New York.
The Breukelen Ballfield courts now feature a newly repaved surface with vibrant color coating, lexan backboards, new hoops and bleachers for spectators, according to a press release.
The renovation also includes improved drainage, new fencing, benches and an accessible bottle-filling station.
“At Parks, we know that beautiful, well-maintained public parks and playgrounds are vital for livable and safe communities,” said Donoghue. “By upgrading the basketball courts here at Breukelen Ballfields, we’re ensuring that New Yorkers of all ages, and particularly young people, have an engaging space to connect with their neighbors and have some safe fun.”
The project was sponsored by the Liberty, Nets and the Social Justice Fund, part of the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation.
“Athletics can transform both the body and spirit and build positive habits and lifelong friendships. We are committed to establishing a community-first basketball experience across the borough,” said Clara Wu Tsai, vice chair of BSE Global.
Alongside Breukelen Ballfields, the Social Justice Fund has also sponsored the $1.8 million court renovations at Jackie Robinson Playground in Crown Heights, Fox Playground in Flatlands, and in Sunset Park.
