New York City Councilman Shekar Krishnan who represents Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, posted his picture at the White House Diwali November 1, dressed in Indian clothes, which he indicated were made by small businesses.

“What a timely, important moment to celebrate Deepavali at the White House last week —reflecting on the meaning of light, goodness, and the common humanity that unites, not divides, us all,” Krishnan said in his weekly newsletter sent out on Monday, November 4.

“I proudly represented Jackson Heights’ small businesses with the sherwani I wore!” he added with the following photo –

“Friday was the first time we have had Diwali as a school holiday in New York,” he noted, adding, “As the first Indian American ever elected to city government, I’m proud to have been a part of the years-long movement to achieve this milestone. So many children like my own now have the opportunity to learn about this special holiday and to see themselves and their culture in what they learn and in the books they read at school. It’s something I didn’t have growing up. The significance of this moment for our children and the generations after is never lost on me.”

Krishnan went on to add, “As we start this week, it is my sincere hope that the light within all of us shines bright and leads the way forward. Happy Diwali!”
