Presser Points: Brian Daboll talks injury news, roster moves
Brian Daboll took the podium Wednesday afternoon at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.
The Giants will hold two days of practices in East Rutherford before a Thursday night flight to Munich, Germany, where they will face the Panthers on Sunday (9:30 a.m. ET) at Allianz Arena.
Here’s what you need to know from the head coach:
📰 Kicker Graham Gano has been designated for return to practice. Gano, who hurt his hamstring attempting to make a tackle on the opening kickoff of the Giants’ Week 2 game at Washington, has been on injured reserve since Sept. 17.
📰 The Giants had subsequently signed veteran Greg Joseph and the veteran made 13 of 16 field goal attempts in six games with his new team. However, Joseph missed this past Sunday’s game against the Commanders with an abdominal injury and was placed on injured reserve. That opened the door for Jude McAtamney to make his NFL debut at MetLife Stadium, where he kicked a 31-yard field goal and an extra point.
📰 Cornerback Art Green was signed to the active roster from the practice squad after the Giants released Nick McCloud. “He’s been doing a good job. Going to give him an opportunity at gunner. Some DB stuff, kind of fourth, fifth DB. He’s done a good job since he’s been here. So, that’s what we did.”
📰 The Giants today also added punter Matt Haack (who was released on Tuesday) and offensive lineman Bryan Hudson to the practice squad. Hudson, a 6-foot-5, 301-pound undrafted rookie out of Louisville, was recently released from the Patriots’ practice squad. He originally entered the NFL with the Lions.
📰 Defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence (veteran rest day), guard Greg Van Roten (shoulder), and wide receivers Darius Slayton (concussion protocol) and Bryce Ford-Wheaton (Achilles) missed practice.
📰 Slayton is “not to where” running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. was at this point last week in the protocol and his status is “questionable” for now. Slayton “could possibly not travel” with the team to Germany. “That hasn’t been decided yet.”
📰 All of the practice squad players will travel to Germany. The Giants will hold a practice there on Friday.
📰 Outside linebacker Brian Burns, who will play against his former team for the first time, has “been a good addition for us. Good leadership, good player for us. Glad we got him.”
📰 The rookies have “a lot of leadership in them” and are “made of the right kind of stuff.”
📰 On signing three undrafted rookie offensive linemen to the practice squad in the past week (tackles Garret Greenfield and Marcellus Johnson in addition to Hudson): “I’d say our scouts are continually looking at players and if we think that there’s something to work with, we get them on the practice squad, and that’s an important position to develop, particularly younger players, so if they have some qualities that we like, we bring them in and work with them, and hopefully develop them.”
📰 On playing tough despite the team record: “I think we’ve got a lot of the right guys that are made of the right DNA. Team-first players. Again, you’re not happy about the results, but you control what you can control, which is the upcoming week. We’ve got a bunch of guys that do that each and every week.”
