Daniel Jones Era May Finally Be Coming to an End for New York Giants
New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll declined to name Daniel Jones his starting quarterback moving forward after the team’s 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Germany on Sunday.
When asked if Jones was still the starting quarterback, Daboll did not say yes. Instead, he said the team is “evaluating things.”

The Giants moved to 2-8 on the season after their loss to the two-win Panthers.
Jones completed 22-of-37 passes for 190 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. He added seven rushes for 26 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
The Giants’ loss extended their losing streak to five games after starting the season 2-3. On the year, Jones has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 2,070 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. During the team’s five-game losing streak, he’s had just one game with more touchdowns than turnovers.
The Giants are on bye this upcoming week. Then, they have a Week 12 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in which there could be a new quarterback.
“We’ll evaluate the tape and make the decision that we think is best for our team,” Daboll said to reporters Monday.
Last month, Giants owner John Mara made it sound like Daboll’s job was safe no matter what happened this season.

“Obviously we’re all very disappointed with where we are right now,” Mara said. “But I’m gonna say one thing: We are not making any changes this season. And I do not anticipate making any changes in the offseason, either.”
However, Daboll knows he needs to make a decision at quarterback that’s best for the organization moving forward, especially if he wants to keep his job long-term.
The Giants drafted Jones with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He’s led them to a winning record in just one season when the team went 9-7-1 in 2022 and earned an upset playoff win.
The Giants rewarded Jones with a four-year, $160 million deal, and he’s played in just 16 games since, going 3-13 in those starts.
Who is the Giants’ Backup Quarterback?
If the Giants were to bench Daniel Jones, the team would deploy Drew Lock as the new starting quarterback.
The Giants signed Lock this offseason to be the backup to Jones. He was a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and has a career record of 9-14 in his 23 starts with the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. In his career, he’s completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 5,289 yards with 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.
