Webster OKs project that will bring ‘extreme value’ supermarket to town

Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, which bills itself as “the nation’s largest extreme value retailer,” has gotten a green light from the Webster Planning Board to proceed with a store in Webster Plaza, 980 Ridge Road.

The business will occupy a long-vacant 20,300-square-foot space next to Savers thrift store.

The interior will be completely remodeled, and minor changes will be made to the building’s exterior, Ivan Hinov of GreenbergFarrow, the Atlanta-based architect for Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, told the Planning Board Nov. 12.

He did not provide a timeline for the project.

Founded in 1946 and based in Emeryville, California, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market sells fresh and frozen foods and name-brand products purchased from suppliers with excess inventory sometimes resulting from manufacturing overruns.

Such “opportunistic sourcing” allows it to sell items at prices generally 40% to 70% below conventional grocers.

The company already plans to open a store in Jay Scutti Plaza North, 300 Hylan Drive, Henrietta, having signed a lease for an existing 23,149-square-foot space there over the summer. However, the buildout has not begun.

Most Grocery Outlet Bargain Market stores are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week and offer delivery through DoorDash, Instacart and Uber Eats.

The majority of the company’s more than 470 locations are in California, Washington and Oregon, but an expansion has added stores in the eastern United States. Depending on how work proceeds, the Henrietta store or the Webster store could be the first to open in New York state.

Grocery Outlet Bargain Market also is eyeing the old Party City space in Irondequoit’s Culver Ridge Plaza for a store, but has not sought needed permits yet, according to the town.

The Webster store won’t be far from the site of Hegedorns Market, which closed in 2023 after 70 years in business.
