NFL Rumors: Daniel Jones Likely to Prefer Joining Playoff Contender After Giants Exit

Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is reportedly interested in joining a team with playoff aspirations as a free agent.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jones is projected to have “multiple options but likely will prefer to finish this season on a playoff-contending team.”

The signal-caller is also expected to clear waivers on Monday and should sign with a team “sooner rather than later” on a one-year contract, per Schefter.

Jones requested his release from the Giants on Friday after he was benched in favor of backup Tommy DeVito.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler listed the Las Vegas Raiders as a “sensible option” for Jones, but the signal-caller may not be interested in signing with the Raiders due to their 2-8 record. Fowler also brought up the San Francisco 49ers as a “situation to watch,” which could make more sense as starter Brock Purdy is currently out with a shoulder injury.

Schefter noted on Saturday that “multiple” front offices for playoff-contending teams are “likely to inquire” about Jones and gauge his level of interest.

Staying within the NFC East doesn’t appear to be a possibility for the 27-year-old, though. The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly not interested in Jones and the Philadelphia Eagles are “unlikely” to pursue him as well, per Schefter.

Jones’ future destination could come down to his willingness to accept a reserve role, as there aren’t many playoff-contending squads with unstable quarterback situations.

Still, his past five years of experience as a starter should make him an enticing option for teams searching for better depth behind their respective quarterbacks. Jones has 69 career starts under his belt as well as two playoff starts.

In 10 appearances during his 2024 campaign prior to his benching and subsequent release, he completed 63.3 percent of his throws for 2,070 yards and eight touchdowns as well as seven interceptions.
