“Playoff-contending team”: Former New York Giants QB Daniel Jones has a specific preference for his next team | NFL News – Times of India
After announcing Tommy DeVito as the starting quarterback, the New York Giants axed 2019 first-round draft pick Daniel Jones. DeVito will start the final seven games of the season, with Drew Lock as his backup. The New York Giants have struggled all season. The team now stands at 2-8 entering Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and ranks near the bottom in net passing yards per game.Recently Jones opened up about one of his preference for his next team.
Daniel Jones have one criterion for selecting his next team
Daniel Jones, a quarterback who has been with the New York Giants for six years, has been released after a largely underwhelming stint. Jones threw eight touchdowns against seven interceptions in 2024, turning his four-year, $160 million contract into an albatross. These events likely make him have just one criterion for selecting which team he goes to next.
“Jones… is expected to have multiple options but likely will prefer to finish this season on a playoff-contending team, where he will be involved in big games, rather than going to a meandering quarterback-needy team not remotely in playoff contention,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote Saturday afternoon.
The Giants had the option to hold Jones hostage for the remainder of the season, but they chose not to do so. In a statement on the Giants website Friday, team president John Mara said, “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
“Sad and happy at the same time. Happy because when he goes in there and asks, they granted it to him and, you know, I’m sure he really appreciates that,” quarterback Drew Lock said. “So I’m happy for him, but at the same time you’re sad to see a brother go.”

Jones learned the lesson that every story has an ending, and every ending is a chance for a new beginning. The Giants are very close to the bottom with their 2-8 record in net passing yards per game. DeVito, being in his second season, will try to break the Giant’s five-game losing streak in this week’s game.
