Liam Payne was attempting to escape from hotel room before he fell to his death: report
Liam Payne was trying to escape from his hotel room when he plummeted to his death — and the hotel staff knew that he had threatened to use the balcony as a means of busting out, according to a report.
The One Direction star, who reportedly hated being holed up in hotel rooms, appeared to be heavily intoxicated when he was dragged through the lobby by staff at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, disturbing security footage shows.
When the hotel employees reached Payne’s room, the pop singer fought back and clearly did not want to go inside, video shows.
Moments later, a staff member called 911 minutes later and said they feared Payne might use the balcony and hurt himself, indicating the hotel was well aware that a serious accident was possible, according to TMZ.
“I don’t know whether his life may be in danger. He is in a room with a balcony, and, well, we’re a little afraid …” the employee said, according to the 911 transcript obtained by the outlet.
The hotel ultimately decided to leave the 31-year-old in his room by himself, and he fell to his death soon afterwards.
When Argentinian authorities discovered his body, Payne had a bag strapped around his shoulder which he notably did not have on him when he was being hauled through the lobby, according to TMZ.
A hat that Payne also was not wearing earlier was found nearby, meaning he must have put it on inside of the room, the outlet added.
According to a police report obtained by TMZ, Payne appeared to be attempting to get from his third floor balcony to a second floor balcony in an apparent attempt to then jump to the ground from a closer distance.
Two days after Payne died, a hotel employee discovered a different brown leather bag filled with pills and a bottle of whiskey with “for Liam” written on it on the second floor balcony.
He likely tossed the bag down to the second floor and planned on retrieving it once he made it there himself, according to TMZ.
The coroner said Payne may have been unconscious when he fell — but he appears to have been conscious just before he fell as he gathered his belongings.
The “For You” singer had a history of using the balcony to escape, most recently in mid-September when his bodyguard, concerned he was on a drug binge, locked him inside of his room at a rental in Florida, TMZ reported.
Despite the Argentine hotel’s awareness of Payne’s balcony escape plan, sources close to the investigation told TMZ that authorities are protecting the hotel and instead have charged three others — his close friend, a waiter and a former hotel employee who allegedly supplied Payne with drugs.
Argentinian police are still investigating the last days of Payne’s life, pouring over hundreds of hours of security footage.
They believe that the singer partied with two prostitutes and went on a drug-fueled bender that culminated in the fatal fall.
An autopsy found that Payne had a toxic mixture of drugs in his system at the time of his death — including crack and so-called “pink cocaine” — which is a mixture of ketamine and other drugs.
