Knicks’ Tom Thibodeau reflects on Tyler Kolek’s recent G League play
New York Knicks rookie Tyler Kolek recently made three appearances in the G League, and coach Tom Thibodeau can see the rookie making progress on the court.
Kolek joined the Westchester Knicks on Dec. 11 for his debut in the G League, with playing time at a minimum with New York out of the rotation. He has averaged 18 points, 6.7 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals one block on 33.3% shooting from 3-point range.
The 34th pick has scored in double figures twice, including a career-high 30 points, nine assists, six rebounds and two steals in a win over the College Park Skyhawks on Dec. 13. The performance caught the attention of Thibodeau, who liked how he played.
“I watched that game and I thought he played really well in that game,” Thibodeau said. “He has a great feel offensively, and I think that he has just got to continue to work. Obviously, like most young guys, the challenge becomes more understanding defense and the things that go into that. I like the way he is progressing a lot.”
Kolek has played sparingly with New York to begin the season, averaging 2.9 points on 45.5% shooting from 3-point range in 16 games. He has mostly played in mop-up duty and has only logged more than 10 minutes in a game four times this season.
The time in the G League has enabled him to see competitive minutes and stay in a rhythm on the court. He has displayed confidence on the court in those minutes and looked to have a strong grasp of the team’s coverages and plays, which typically resemble the ones run by Thibodeau.
Kolek is continuing to settle into his rookie campaign and will look to further add to his game and skill set. He is back with New York and will be looking for his next opportunity to make an impact with the Knicks.
