Andrew and Sassie Duggleby were tired and frustrated with how long flights took to travel from Japan to the US. In 2020, they founded Venus Aerospace, a Texas company that is now aiming to create flights that will fly faster than the speed of sound. Six times faster, to be precise.

According to reports, the company, which is working to make hypersonic travel a reality is building an engine that could allow a hypersonic jet to fly from New York to London at the speed of up to 3,600mph in just one hour! This engine, called Venus Detonation Ramjet 2,000lb Thrust Engine, also known as VDR2, will cut the travel time between these two iconic cities by seven hours.

The undertaking is in collaboration with aerospace company Velontra, and a test flight is scheduled for next year. According to experts, this hypersonic jet will soar higher than traditional aircraft, utilising conventional jet engines for takeoff before transitioning to rocket propulsion at altitude. While not quite reaching the edge of space, passengers will be treated to a breathtaking spectacle of the Earth against the black space.

The applications of this would be enormous. The same technology could be used to power drones, and other high-speed vehicles, revolutionising the way we travel. However, realistically, the hyperjet could be operational in 2030s, according to the couple. According to Express UK, the company claims that “their Stargazer M400 will be Earth’s first hypersonic, reusable aircraft, capable of travelling for 5,000 miles whilst producing half the CO2 emissions of an ordinary flight.”
