Aaron Rodgers teases retirement as Jets begin organizational overhaul | Sporting News

It may be a farewell tour for Aaron Rodgers, but it may not be.

With three games remaining on the 2024 schedule, the 41-year-old Rodgers and the New York Jets are playing out the string.

Unable to finish better than 7-10 overall, the Jets are staring at an offseason of major change. In the coming months, New York will hire a new general manager, presumably a new head coach and potentially a veteran quarterback to take the snaps in the short term.

Whether or not Rodgers winds up being that quarterback is nothing but a known at this time.

“There’s a lot of reasons why this would be a great opportunity, but I’m going to see what happens,” said Rodgers on Wednesday in Florham Park. “There’s a lot of things that have to happen. You got to hire a GM, got to hire a head coach, and then whether or not I’m part of the conversation, or whether or not they move on. Whatever happens, I’ll be taking my time and thinking about my future.”

Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, may opt to retire although he doesn’t foresee that decision occurring immediately after the season finale on January 5.

“I’m going to take some time after the year, unless, you know, you’re released right away. I’ll still take some time whether or not I want to I want to play. I’ll take some time to get away from it either way,” said Rodgers.

The four-time NFL MVP has performed better of late, presumably because he’s no longer hampered by lower body injuries. In the past two games on the road against Jacksonville and Miami, Rodgers has thrown for 628 yards and four touchdowns without committing a turnover. As far as carrying this feeling over to next year, Rodgers remains uncommitted.

“It’s possible. Might be sitting on a beach, though,” said Rodgers.
