Ahead of SL vs SA T20 World Cup match, security tightened at New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium – CNBC TV18

The security at New York’s new developed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, has been tightened as it gears up to host its first-ever cricket game.

Nassau County International Cricket Stadium will play host to Sri Lanka and South Africa later today for a Group D match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

According to a report by BBC, police snipers at covert locations have been deployed around the 34,000 capacity venue. According to a report in US based media outlet The Mirror a pro-ISIS group threatened to target the tournament.

The BBC report further suggests that Nassau County Police Department is overlooking the security operations.

The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place,” the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement to BBC Sport.

The cricket stadium is also the venue for high-profile clash between Asian rivals India and Pakistan. The match will be played on Sunday. Eight World Cup games will be played at this venue and 10 different teams, including home side and co-hosts USA will be visiting the stadium for their World Cup games.

According to the BBC report the stadium has been erected at a cost of £24m ($30m). It is only a temporary arrangement and will will be dismantled after the World Cup and the land on which it is built will be returned to Nassau County.
