AL Rookie of the Year odds: Yankees’ Luis Gil now in conversation

Luis Gil entered spring training as an afterthought in the Yankees’ potential starting rotation.

Now, he’s entering the American League Rookie of the Year race.

Gil, who slotted in for Gerrit Cole after he was shut down with an elbow injury before the season, has pitched like the ace the Bronx Bombers needed, vaulting him into an unlikely award run.

Coming off a dominant 14-strikeout performance against the White Sox, Gil, who is 6-1, threw 6 ⅓ scoreless innings on Thursday, allowing just one hit and striking out eight during the Yankees’ 5-0 win over the Mariners.

Gil, who is in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022, set a Yankees record with his 11th straight start of five-plus innings with two or fewer earned runs, lowering his ERA to 2.11, which ranks third in the AL among qualified pitchers.

He has been particularly dominant in May, going 5-0 with an 0.59 ERA in the month.

The Dominican Republic native’s amazing two-month stretch has him squarely in a competitive AL Rookie of the Year conversation, sitting at +380 at FanDuel Sportsbook, which trails only Mason Miller (+125) and Colton Cowser (+360).

Before the season, Gil was “off the board” at BetMGM Sportsbook for the award, suggesting that oddsmakers gave him virtually zero shot at taking home the hardware.

Last week, before his 14 punchout outing and latest win over the Mariners, Gil was +1800 to win the award at BetMGM.

Gil has even gained some traction in the AL Cy Young race, though that’s a much bigger long shot given the competition.

He is tied with fellow Yankees starter Clark Schmidt at +4000 to win the award on FanDuel’s odds board, the 11th-best odds in the Junior Circuit.
