Arkansas men’s basketball signee Boogie Fland named Mr. New York Basketball | Whole Hog Sports

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas men’s basketball signee Johnuel “Boogie” Fland was named Mr. New York Basketball on Thursday.

The senior point guard was originally committed to Kentucky but followed new Razorbacks coach John Calipari to Arkansas.

Fland is the second Archbishop Stepinac player to receive the award as New York’s best player, following RJ Davis, who won in 2020. Davis is a standout guard at North Carolina who is returning for his fifth and final season of collegiate eligibility.

Fland, a 5-star prospect, averaged 19.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.4 steals per game for Stepinac this season. He is one of three freshmen to follow Calipari to Fayetteville, joining Karter Knox and Billy Richmond. Fland committed to Arkansas on April 25.

Fland is an explosive guard who can beat players off the dribble and is capable of scoring from the perimeter. Fland may be a multi-year player, with his AAU coach saying he doesn’t need to be a one-and-done prospect like many Calipari freshmen at Kentucky.

Being paired with an experienced guard like Florida Atlantic transfer Johnell Davis is expected to help Fland’s adjustment to college basketball.
