Arnoff Moving and Storage celebrates 100 years of business

MALTA, N.Y. — Arnoff Moving and Storage celebrated 100 years in business.

A celebration was recently held at the company’s Malta location, celebrating the accomplishments of what was once a small local moving company into what is now a full-service moving and storage company serving New York’s Hudson Valley, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Florida – as well as many other states across the country.

At the celebration in Malta, the community was invited to join the family business as it celebrated the century of service with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a variety of activities including Touch-a-truck, food from The Neighborhood Kitchen Food Truck and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and raffles supporting The Food Pantries for the Capital District.

A second celebration at its Poughkeepsie location is set for May 7.

The company was established in 1924 by Abraham Arnoff and his son Louis in Lakeville, Connecticut with just one truck and a goal to aid neighbors in furniture deliveries.

Over the years the company grew and when Louis’s son Richard and his wife Phyllis took over, they expanded operations to Poughkeepsie which allowed the company’s reach to grow into New York’s Hudson Valley as Arnoff transformed into a major player in the relocation industry.

When the next generation came around, Mike and Mark Arnoff expanded even further by setting up operations in the Capital Region as well as in Florida. In 2016, it was announced that Arnoff would move its headquarters from where it had been located for the last 35 years in Albany to a new site in Malta — a move that President Mike Arnoff called at the celebration “one of the greatest decisions the company has made.”

“It (the Albany location) was great and it worked really well, but we knew we had outgrown the facility by a couple of years and we had to make a decision,” Mike Arnoff said. “We were looking at a number of different locations, and we made the decision to come to Malta and it was a great, great decision.”

Mike Arnoff shared that he has been thrilled to see the company evolve, explaining that while it has grown from just being a household moving company to now being a solutions provider to worldwide companies providing warehousing, distribution channels and trucking services, it has still kept the traditional base business,

“It makes me think of my grandfather, my dad and it’s just amazing and hard to sum it up into some words.” Mike Arnoff shared when reflecting on the many years the company had been in business. “We work hard every day, and we are fairly humble people. We keep our heads down, we work on one job at a time, we try to do the best that we can and then we reflect on it.

“Today is a day of reflection and being thankful for what our customers have offered to us and the opportunities we have had.”

Arnoff Moving and Storage is now on the fifth generation, with Mike’s two sons Dan and Craig and his nephew Nick working to oversee operations and run the business. Mike shares that he thinks it’s amazing that he gets to work with his family and while there are hard days, all job or business have hard days and the Arnoffs make sure to always shake hands and never go home unhappy.

At the 100th anniversary celebration Craig Arnoff, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, shared that he, his brother and his cousin feel very honored to be a part of the family business and are excited to be the fifth generation that gets to play a part in progressing the company into the future. When looking forward, Craig Aroff explains what’s going to keep the company around for another 100 years is the dedication that is placed on advancement and keeping with the times.

“We’re really excited to celebrate this milestone of our company and are excited to be here in Malta where we continue to grow what five generations ago got started,” Craig Arnoff said. “We look forward to progressing with the success we have had in the moving, logistics and warehouse industries.”

“As we look forward we are looking at new opportunities every day and trying to make sure that as everything from technology to the economy, to how people move and transfer goods advances, we can keep up with the latest and greatest inside and outside the industry as well as trying to look towards the future and be in new and different industries that will continue to bring us business.”
