Belmont Stakes at Saratoga: Wide-Open Race (with Betting Picks)

The final leg of the Triple Crown in the U.S. will take place this Saturday at Saratoga, as the Belmont Stakes is the eye-catching race on a stacked card. Mystik Dan and Seize The Grey landed victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, respectively. But can either become a multiple-time winner on the Triple Crown schedule this year? You can find our Belmont Stakes betting preview here.

A thrilling edition of the Belmont Stakes is set for this weekend, with a number of graded stakes winners set to go to post. Fierceness will not be among those to take his chance in the Triple Crown race, meaning that there will be a firm favorite at the top of the betting in the form or Sierra Leone.

The Chad Brown runner was an excellent second in the Kentucky Derby, and he looks good value to reverse the form with Mystik Dan. However, it could be worth taking a chance on Mindframe when making a bet on horse racing this weekend. The Todd Pletcher runner has looked like a superstar on his two starts this year, most recently finishing over seven lengths clear of the field in an optional claimer over an extended mile at Churchill Downs.

Belmont Stakes Betting Analysis

Get ready for the thrilling conclusion of the Triple Crown! This weekend, all eyes turn to Saratoga. There will be a competitive feel to the Belmont Stakes this year, with the field competing over a reduced distance. Horses aged three will be competing in the race, with the ‘Test of the Champion’ seeing both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winners involved.

However, it will be Sierra Leone that will likely go off favorite for Chad Brown. The three-year-old was narrowly denied Derby success after finishing second to Mystik Dan at Churchill Downs, but he looks set to reverse that form after boasting the quickest fractionals of any runner in the race in the closing stages.

But, one of the most interesting rivals that we found in this Belmont Stakes betting preview is Mindframe. The Todd Pletcher runner looks hugely progressive at this stage and has won by a combined 24 lengths across his two starts to date. Further progress will likely make him hard to overlook.

Honor Marie did all his best work late in the Derby, and his eighth at Churchill Downs could be upgraded based on the issues that the three-year-old encountered in running. Antiquarian could also be hard to dismiss after winning the G3 Peter Pan on his previous start, which was the same prep won by 2023 victor Arcangelo.

Belmont Stakes Previous Winners and Betting Trends

The Belmont Stakes has been an interesting leg of the Triple Crown since Justify’s historic success in 2018. Since then, it has been a race where talented runners have risen to the occasion, with Essential Quality and Mo Donegal both winning despite failing to land success in the Kentucky Derby.

The market has typically been right when finding the winner of the Belmont Stakes, with three of the last four being sent off as the favorite. Meanwhile, the only exception to that rule came last year when Arcangelo stormed to a success. However, the pre-race favorite hasn’t finished outside of the top two in the last seven editions.

Belmont Stakes Betting Picks

Sierra Leone appears to be the right favorite this weekend based on the evidence found in this Belmont Stakes betting preview and popular horse racing picks. However, Mindframe could be the most progressive runner in the field after dominating on each of his previous two starts. Further improvement could see him become very challenging to bet against, while we could see Sierra Leone taking second, and Mystik Dan finishing third.
